Grassland Services

Certified Grassland Professionals

Grassland Consulting Services

This service we offer - is available to assist you in your planning, design and implementation of your grazing system. Or, to just "tweek" some possible shortfalls in an existing system that may not be working up to its potential or your satisfaction. We just want to be included in your network of professionals. Sometimes merely a fresh look from someone outside your operation can reveal things that have been overlooked or taken for granted.

Ian Kurtz

We are very excited about adding this service within our network of professionals. Although David and Gary have worked with many customers "on the farm" in the past, they just simply haven't had the time to get to everyone. Now with Ian as our "anchor" for grassland consulting services we  have another link in our network in place.

Meet Ian Kurtz:  He has been involved with grassland conservation throughout his 35 year career with Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Ian and his son Jamie also own and operate a cow-calf operation, as well as do some custom grazing of feeder cattle for other producers. In their own operation they use warm and cool season grasses and legumes along with a managed intensive grazing system. They also do a significant amount of stock piling of fescue to reduce or eliminate the need to feed hay during the winter months.

Ian recieved a BS degree in Plant and Soil Science from Southwest Missouri State University. We don't have room here for all of his credentials, although they are impressive. Ian was awarded the "Grasslander of the Year" award in 2001 by the Missouri Forage and Grassland Council. As a Grassland Specialist, he has many qualities that are hard to find - he has knowledge plus "hands-on real-world experience". Within our Ozark region, Ian is well respected by producers as well as his peers.

He has taught at many Grazing Schools including subjects such as power fencing, system design, plant growth, grazier's arithmetic, and water system design. As a consultant, you can expect Ian to give you straight forward answers to real world situations. Whether you need assistance with designing a new grazing system or just working with an existing one - to make it better - Ian can give you the edge you need to ultimately manage your resources and become a better grazier.

Just as every farm or ranch operation is different - so are the consulting services that we offer. We do not have any rigid guidelines, consulting "packages", or flat fees that we operate within. Our goal is to help make you a better grazier and become more profitable - with your grass.

Our system is quite simple - just call us and let us know that you may be interested in consulting services.  We will notify Ian and he will call  you back to visit with you on the phone first about your interests. He will explain what we can do for you. I recently heard Ian say "sometimes, its only a matter of teaching people how and why to close some gates."

We have reasonable hourly and daily fees plus expenses.

What is meant by Certified Grassland Professional ?

Persons possessing the professional credentials will be qualified to plan critical conservation practices and implement sound resource management of pasture, hayland and grazed cropland.

Critical conservation practices include, but are not limited to:

  • Prescribed grazing
  • Water supply alternatives
  • Stream crossings
  • Fencing
  • Livestock trails and walkways

Our Certified  Grassland Professionals will also be classed as Technical Service Providers (TSP's) and will be recognized by agencies that administer cost share programs for conservation practices.

Regarding Cost Shares: We understand that at present.........these services are available through your local NRCS offices with no charge. You can ask your local administering agency for clarification on who you can use for design help with your grazing system. If you want to put in a grazing system that is not cost shared, you can also inquire about NRCS agency assistance in the design, or we will be happy to work with you. Thanks
