The Grazer's Connection
is more than a product catalog - its about grazing.
We had previously put our publication on this website, But with this new issue being 36 pages of full color, it has become too large of a file to post on line, and many of our rural customers on dial up connections couldn't open it anyway.  We have instead - added a PRODUCTS section to our website so that you can view all of our products on line.

We hope that you will want a hard copy of The Grazer's Connection, so please just give us a call or drop us an email, and we will be happy to mail you the newest current issue. Thank you.

"The Missouri Grazing Experience - Lessons Learned"

by Jim Gerrish

Twenty years ago, there were not many people talking about year-around grazing and those were mostly crackpots and out-of-touch academics. It sounded nice in theory, but would never work on a real-world farm. As it turns out, the problem was we were not trying to manage our forage resources in the context of time and space. We had a bad habit of making hay and most farmers and ranchers were addicted to new paint and black smoke. We had to learn that the growing season and the grazing season are two different things. The idea of stockpiling tall fescue and grazing it in the winter had been around for a long time but had not been fine-tuned to be  workable as a full-winter feed resource.

Researchers continued to research and pioneer producers boldly stepped forward and bit by bit we began to learn how to grow a higher quality stockpile, how to ration it out, that maybe calving in February was not the best thing to do, and a host of other things. Then one day, we came to the realization that feed a cow in the wintertime didn't have to be expensive if we calved her just a little later. Then we started to find we could grow stockpile that was good enough to keep a fall-calving cow ticking through the winter. We found we had made a major impact on winter feed costs. We actually began to understand the term of "matching forage and animal resources". We were becoming better managers because we had a better understanding of our resources..........read more in The Grazer's Connection.

Dollars & Sense, The Economics of Electric Fencing

by Connie Krider

Most livestock producers will agree that good pastureland is a valuable resource. Yet, pastures continue to be the most neglected and mis-managed crops in all of agriculture. Lime and fertilizer application, seedings, and brush control are amoung management practices used to establish healthy pastures. But, to maintain productive forage for optimal grazing, fence posts should be planted first. Fencing provides the control necessary to graze and rest pastures for maximum utilization and yield.

Once properly installed, fencing becomes a barrier to contain and control the movement of animals. Two of the most common types of permanent livestock fencing wires are barbed wire and hi-tensile electric wire. One or the other can be used exclusively as an effective barrier, or a combination of the two types can be used to compliment each other.

A five strand barbed wire fence makes a highly effective deterrent for most types of livestock. It's a traditional style of fencing that many producers are familiar with and are comfortable with. Commonly existing perimeter fences were constructed using barbed wire. It is designed to be a permanent, stationary structure. The downside to a fence constructed using barbed wire, as opposed to using quality hi-tensile wire, is labor, expense, lesser longevity and inflexibility. However, by adding an offset strand of electrified hi-tensile wire to a barbed wire perimeter fence it wil help to increase the lifespan of the barbed wire fence while adding versatility for a grazing system.

Electric fencing is similar to other forms of electronic technology. It gives you more capabilities, but it requires a bit of education to use it properly and to its full capacity..........read more in The Grazer's Connection.
